USD Law Library Veteran to
Lead Effort to Revitalize
County Law Library System
March 14, 2010 - The San Diego County Public Law Library Board of Trustees announced today the hiring of John Adkins as its new executive director.
Adkins, a lawyer with a Master's in library and information science, has served as head of public services for the University of San Diego Center for Legal Research since 1998.
In that role he served as a member of the strategic management team and led several large campaigns promoting the services of the law library. He also served two terms as president of the San Diego Area Law Libraries.
"I have a passion for this library and for its mission," Adkins said. "I can't imagine a more worthy capstone than to help build this library into a place known for its professionalism and its concern for those who need it."
Adkins' hiring comes as the library board is about to embark upon a major renovation of its downtown facility and a broader effort to make the library a premiere resource for legal information for both the general public and the legal community.
"John's extensive law library experience and dynamic leadership style are exactly what we need to transform the county law library system into a vibrant, active part of the San Diego community," said Judge Julia Kelety, president of the library board.
The San Diego County Public Law Library is an independent public agency established under state law to provide legal information to the residents of San Diego County. The library is open to the public and has four branches throughout the county.
Adkins, who starts on May 3, replaces Robert Riger, who resigned as director last fall. Joan Allen-Hart has served as interim director while the board conducted a search for a new director.
"Joan has been an amazing asset to the library and we cannot thank her enough for her efforts," Kelety said.
