The San Diego Law Library is pleased to announce the election of its new Board Officers for 2011. At its January meeting, the Board of Trustees elected the Honorable Julia Craig Kelety as President, Jeffrey Cawdrey as Vice President/President Elect, Carolyn Brock as Assistant Secretary, and the Honorable Albert T. Harutunian, III as Treasurer.

Kelety, appointed to the San Diego Superior Court by Gov. Davis in 2003, has served on the Law Library Board since 2006. This will be her third year to serve as President. In announcing the election, Director of Libraries John W. Adkins said, "Judge Kelety's steady hand and good advice are helping the Law Library move into a new era of advanced services and technology for legal information. She is presiding over the law library's $3.2 million renovation of the downtown branch, and her great leadership is what has propelled this project forward."

Cawdrey, a partner with Gordon & Rees, LLP, specializes in business and bankruptcy law and litigation. He has served on the Law Library Board since 2007. He is a court appointed mediator for the United States Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of California, has served as judge pro tem for the San Diego Superior Court (Small Claims Division), and has served as director, vice president, and president of the San Diego Bankruptcy Forum.

Brock, a California State Bar Certified Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law specialist is a sole proprietor in La Mesa with over 15 years of experience. She is currently Vice President of the Foothills Bar Association and has served on its Board of Directors since 2006. Brock was appointed to the Law Library Board of Trustees by the County Board of Supervisors in February 2009.

Harutunian, appointed to the San Diego Municipal Court by Gov. Wilson in 1995 and elevated to the Superior Court in 1998, was selected to serve on the Law Library Board of Trustees in August 2009. Prior to joining the Law Library Board, he served on the Boards of Directors of the American Red Cross, Crime Victims Fund, and Rotary Club in San Diego.

Limited Hours and Services at the Temporary Library

The Main Library is now open at a new temporary location while its home at 1105 Front Street undergoes a $3.2 million renovation. Due to space and staffing constraints, the temporary library (1168 Union Street) is open only from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

Scope of services at temporary location:

  • Legal research (print or electronic) limited to 30 minutes per day on a first come first served basis (only four seats are available).
  • Document delivery — you must have the exact citation, e.g. title and page number, etc.
  • Limited collection of practice materials available for circulation or patron use at the temporary library.
  • Referrals to legal aid organizations or other law libraries.
  • Referrals to free legal websites.
  • Intra-library loan of materials from other SDLL branches.
  • Membership account transactions limited to:
    • Renewals
    • Returns
    • New accounts/library cards
    • Account closures

We appreciate your patience and continued patronage during our period of renovation and transformation into a vibrant community resource with expanded facilities and services.

SDLL Welcomes New Deputy Director Michelle Schmidt

The San Diego Law Library is pleased to welcome its new Deputy Director, Michelle Schmidt. Schmidt is an accomplished law firm library manager with over 30 years of experience including management of multiple legal support departments, development and maintenance of library, docket and records department webpages, and delivery of legal, non-legal, and business development research and reference services. Prior to joining the San Diego Law Library, Schmidt worked at Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP from 1998 to 2006 and at Morrison & Foerster (MoFo) from 2000 to 2009. She worked for the San Diego Law Library as Substitute Legal Reference Librarian since 2000. Most recently, she worked as Senior Research Analyst at L.R. Hodges & Associates in Carlsbad.

In announcing the appointment, Director of Libraries John W. Adkins said, "Michelle is one of a kind - a powerhouse of ideas, enthusiasm, and energy. She brings the perfect combination of experience and vision to this position. She has held prestigious leadership positions in the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) and its Southern California (SCALL) and San Diego (SANDALL) chapters."
